Storm Clouds, Great Ride, And Graphics Fun

I don't claim to be a great graphic designer and when it comes to cool computer programs, I have an ancient Aldus Freehand that Adobe doesn't even make any more, but I do still have fun with it! For example, the image above is a composite of a few photographs that I am hoping expresses my day. Today I went for a great ride on my sweet horse Little Bit with new friends from the barn Little Bit recently moved to. The weather today was dramatic with bright sun, gusty wind, and then a fast moving thunderstorm. Those kind of storms where the clouds billow up black and ominous, thunder rolls, a few big drops of rain...and then bright sun again.

So in my little graphically altered image above I have placed my darling Little Bit against a landscape of stormy clouds, sun and emerald green that I hope expresses the feeling I experienced today.

New Miniature ACEO - Baby Chicks Get Color!

This morning I worked in some yummy canary yellow on my Three Baby Chicks miniature painting - ACEO. The colors are very strong right now but will become toned down as I add all those tiny white feathers which will make the little chicks extra cute and fuzzy.

Cool and rainy here in New England, I even have a fire going in the woodstove! Great day to snug in and paint.

Periwinkle Background For New Miniature Painting ACEO

This afternoon I worked in a Periwinkle Blue background to my latest miniature painting (ACEO). After a delightful debate with my pals on Twitter: GumsMinis and Debbie Lamey-MacDonald about which colors are truly complimentary, or opposites on the color wheel, I chose to work in my favorite shade of periwinkle, which is a blue violet.

A million years ago when I was in art school, color theory absolutely fascinated me! The way colors directly opposite each other on the color wheel, can resonate and have such a dramatic effect, is just thrilling (in my opinion). So, knowing that my little chicks are going to be canary yellow to golden yellow, I worked in a blue violet to violet background to create that drama. One particular Prisma colored pencil that I use often has the creamiest sensation when I work it over an ink wash, this shade of periwinkle always makes me happy when I begin to spread it like butter over a blue background!

Below is my little ACEO in hand as a reminder of the size of my paintings.

The Perfect Day

Today was just one of those absolutely perfect days! I knew this in advance. After both weekend days spent fulfilling domestic chores and grooming my art business, I checked the weather forecast and saw that today was going to be stellar. I chose to step out from my studio and away from the unfolded laundry to spend the day outside on the country trails with my sweet horse Little Bit. The hills around Rocky Meadow Farm where Little Bit lives, were deep emerald green, and the quiet trails filled with soft blue wild flowers. Small shoots of this summer's corn were peeking out of the farmers fields as we trotted past on our horses. My darling Little Bit was the perfect gentleman as always, even after spending the winter just hanging out in the paddock munching hay (sometimes horses can get quite frisky after such inactivity).

All in all, it was truly heaven and I am so grateful for this particular joy in my life! Now, back to the drawing board, happy and relaxed.

New Miniature ACEO Three Baby Chicks Work In Progress

On this lovely summer like day (after the first dip of the season in my freshly skimmed and vacuumed pool...I did all the cleaning, no pool boy here! lol) I got a nice start on a new miniature ACEO. After three Frog Princes, with their slick shiny skin, I was craving a fluffy subject.

I also really liked this piece I did of the little bunny:

So I am adding some of that decorative border to this new miniature.

Thursday

In The Garden

Today was my day for adding all the sweet annual flowers around my home.
Below I added Impatients, wild strawberries snagged from around the property, and a few house plant cuttings for fun. This area is full shade so the house plants should be OK.

Below is another shady little spot, and yes, those really were my son's cowboy boots years ago!

The corner of my back deck (you have to picture this pot all "filled in" as the flowers grow and bloom) there are pale yellow Petunias and bright yellow Marigolds. I even added a few carrots for fun:

More old cowboy boots and a tough little Geranium who made it through the winter indoors:

Finally, three huge pots I plant up each year. I thought I would try Irises as an anchor and I also added Morning Glories and a trellis to the very center pot.

Now I am happily exhausted and a bit sunburned.
Enjoy!!

Glorious 50th Birthday Celebration

I celebrated my 50th birthday with my sister this past weekend at the delightful High Pocket Bed and Breakfast in Colrain Mass.

My sis Mickey (right) and I just back from our trail ride.

That's Thunder beside me, Mickey's mount who was just the sweetest, most perfect gentleman for my sis. I rode a petite horse named "Little Red", who had that high energy, sports car kind of feel...a stark contrast to my own horse, Little Bit, who is more of a (slightly rusty) vintage Jeep.

High Pocket Bed and Breakfast is known as a country getaway plus horseback riding...kind of a "horsey B&B". As I mentioned in my last post, I am a bit horse crazy (my sis is not, but is super supportive and always game for adventure) Six months ago when I began to ponder how I would want to mark this significant birthday, horses, country, and sis all came to mind.

On Friday I picked up Mickey (a Brooklyn resident) from the train station and together we meandered north to the tiny town of Colrain, Ma. When one is with a best friend on a brilliantly sunny spring day in New England, every bit of the journey is delightful...even when accidentally taking the loooooong way around to your destination (which we did)! The house at High Pocket was beautiful! An old farm house all done up inside with charm and warmth. A stout wood stove in the great room, quilts everywhere and that scrumptious periwinkle blue as an accent in the "Chester Room" we chose.

Below is a view of the 160 year old farm house at High Pocket Bed and Breakfast (that we got all to ourselves this weekend)

Friday night, as the perfect spring sun began to descend, Mickey and I headed over to the little town of Shelburn Falls Ma. for dinner. Following our hosts Sarah and Mark's suggestion, we checked out Shelburn's Bridge of Flowers, an old trolly bridge that has been lushly planted with flowers, trees, vines, and other magical flora.

We ate a sumptuous dinner at Cafe Martins (left) in Shelburn Falls Ma. Then had a lazy and quiet evening snuggled under puffy quilts by the woodstove at High Pocket, eating chocolate and dozing shamelessly!

Saturday morning dawned gray but not too chilly. We gathered and brushed our Tennessee Walking horses (which for me was as much fun as riding) we then headed out with our host Mark on a two hour jaunt through deep woods and open pasture on High Pocket's 540 acres. I was so proud of sis who even broke into a soft lope on Thunder, and survived with a smile! I was able to put Little Red into a gaited trot occasionally and that was a blast.

Saturday night was dinner at the quirky, charming, Green Emporium restaurant in Colrain, Ma. The emporium had a definite "Alice's Restaurant" feel and the food was scrumptious. After dinner were a few more hours of lazing by the woodstove, under handmade quilts, eating yet more chocolate, and gabbing into the night.

I would say the weekend birthday celebration was perfect and will stay as a sweet memory for the next fifty years! Thanks Mickey.
