New Painting, New Size, Different Style

The above image is from one of a Jan Brett's book. Jan is what of my favorite illustrators (who also lives in New England's Berkshire Mountains). I am taking on a new children's book and experimenting with a new size format for my work. With the somewhat larger size, I wanted to try my hand at the ornate and intricate borders similar to Jan Brett's.

Below is the first rough design for my newest miniature, "Mouse With Fall Border" Its 4x6 inches, roughed out in pencil on cotton Bristol with a vellum finish.

"Duncan Alexander And Rupert"
4 x 6 Inches on 100% Cotton Bristol
India Ink and Colored Pencil with a touch of white Acrylic

I experimented with a new size and surface with this little painting...love the size despise the surface! I will definitely not use this weight or finish of Bristol again. But, I persevered and completed the painting.
Since the little piece does not exactly make my heart sing, I am selling it at a reduced price so this little bunny art can find a quick home. These cute black bunny rabbits are two of the Fabbitz. Duncan will be the main character in a new book I am illustrating and one reason for my experiment on new surfaces.

Bunnies And Lace Mini Art Next Steps

(Click image to zoom in a smidge)

To your right is a close up of the detail a few hours ago:

I worked a bit more on the new miniature painting of two sweet bunnies named Duncan and Rupert. I am using a new surface tonight and must say I am not too pleased with the effect! I normally work on very heavy 4 ply Illustration board, while this piece is done on 2 ply Bristol board with a plate finish. I will likely have my favorite "support" (that's the art name for your paper) cut into a larger size. Or, perhaps the Bristol, only much heavier and with a vellum finish (that would give my surface more "tooth" or texture). At 4 x 6 inches, this is large compared to the 3.5 x 2.5 (ACEO) format I usually work in. These bunny rabbits are two of the Fabbitz. Duncan will be the main character in a new book I am illustrating and one reason for my experiment on new surfaces.

Spent The Day Getting Her Settled Into College

My beautiful, brilliant, and talented daughter is now attending Bard College At Simons Rock.

The early college describes itself:

"What if you could leave high school after the 10th or 11th grade and start college?"

Getting her all set up and tucked into the dorms was an all day event. It was the culmination of two years of crossing our "I"s and dotting our "T"s, of processing loans, acquiring grants, receiving scholarships, attending interviews, writing essays, re-writing essays... and, it was all so worth it! The college is beautiful and sincerely dedicated to giving those unique young students, who would have "spun their wheels" at public high school, an opportunity to shine. I am exhausted today, but so full of pride and joy.

I hope your day is just as joy filled!

Miniature Painting Of Bunnies Taking Shape

(Click image to zoom in a smidge)

I worked a bit more on the new miniature painting of two sweet bunnies named Duncan and Rupert. Adding the deep, flat black of the bunnies is beginning to bring the painting alive. At four by six inches, this is quite large compared to the ACEO format I usually work in. These little bunnies are Two of the Fabbitz. Duncan will be the main character in a new book I am illustrating written by the Fabbitz number one "bunny herder", Julia.

Here are the...oh so Famous Fabbitz at their Big Birthday Bash!

(Click image to zoom in a smidge)

Tonight I am working on a new miniature painting of two sweet bunnies named Duncan and Rupert. The mediums I've used at this point are India ink and pencil, (the wash in the background is diluted ink). This little painting is four by six inches, which is actually quite large compared to the ACEO format I usually work in. These little bunnies are Two of the Fabbitz. Duncan will be the main character in a new book I am illustrating written by the Fabbitz number one "bunny herder", Julia.

Where In The World Is Little Bit?

The weather here in New England has finally begun to feel like summer! We are having a handful of steamy, sticky, and typical late summer days... hazy, hot, and humid. So, I have been heading out to the barn where I board my sweet horse Little Bit, late in the day just on the edge of evening when the heat begins to slide away with the sun.

This is the sixth in my summer series (and guessing game) of graphically altered images; "Where In the World Is Little Bit?". I often am at a loss for words when I try to describe time with my beloved horse Little Bit. The above image represents yesterday's time with my equine pal. In you comments, try to guess what my experience was like from these pictures, I'll send out a free print of your choice, add your comment here, and link to your blog!

From the last episode of "Where In The World Is Little Bit?":

The comments:
"Eager anticipation of a soul-refreshing day. Even the dog is racing toward the woods. A light breeze adds a tingle of delight as the sunshine warms your skin. In the woods, you inhale the smells of ferns, moss, and fresh leaves; listen to the chirping of songbirds, a babbling creek, and the soft clomp of horse hooves along a well-trodden path. Along the way you observe the tiniest of nature's creatures going about their busy day - the warty texture of a toad, the smooth shell of a snail, an energetic squirrel scampering; and you soak in the brilliant colors of the forest. As you stroke Little Bits warm fur, you are thankful that he can escort you on such a beautiful day. Surely, this day will appear in some way in one of your future artist creations. Lucky you!"

~Cheryl Kugler of Creative Time

Previous comments:
From Pencilportraits in response to last weeks episode:

"I know, I know, Little Bit has started work at the Forestry Commission in England with myself and Willow. Little Bit is very brave and enters dark dark woods where no one else wanders but forges ahead valiantly to lead the team to safety!!!!"

~Karie-Ann Cooper

From Kathleen Coy of Life Earth Sky

"Aw, you and Little Bit are in a wood so quiet that all you can hear are the raindrops. The smells of wet leather, horse, damp earth and leaves mix together to create the most beautiful perfume imaginable... *sigh*"

~Kathleen Coy

Here are a few other wonderful bits of writing from my loyal readers from this episode of "Where In The World Is Little Bit?":

From my dear friend and fellow artist Wyanne Chase

"Its a lazy Sunday afternoon, mid-afternoon. Melody and Little Bit wandered aimlessly through the rolling open meadows without a worry in the world.

Little Bit nipped at the tall grasses while Melody held out both hands, waist high, palms down, letting the soft grasses tickle her skin as they wandered.

They stopped to listen - a gentle breeze whispered, chick-a-dees chattered with each other. Laying down in tall grasses side by side, they stared up at the endless blue sky, defining shapes in the high puffy clouds, daydreaming, wishing summer would never come to an end.

Just a couple of best friends, enjoying each other's company on a lazy Sunday afternoon mid-summer."

~Wyanne Chase

From fellow artist extraordinaire Kathleen Coy

"Mel, I see you and Little Bit under a gorgeous blue summer sky, surrounded by the lush green of the season, and feeling like everything is wide open and goes on forever..."

~Kathleen Coy

From Deb of ArtShtick
"Bit is in Teletubby land! There are rolling green hills and cottontails bounding through the landscape. The sun shines bright every day, and the nicest little purple, yellow, red and lime colored people come to play! "

~Deb

Emergency Sunday Vet Visit... Dizzy Kitty

That's my kitty "Indiana Jones" above, a big orange fluff ball of a feline. This morning, just as I pulled on my riding boots to head out to the barn, Indiana staggered drunkenly across the living-room, tumbled down the stairs, and collapsed in my front yard yowling in pain and fear! My first thought was that he was poisoned somehow. I rushed him to the vet, (mind you it is Sunday and the vet is a half hour away) The vets diagnosis was feline idiopathic vestibular syndrome. A very long name for a brief but frightening ailment for which no one knows the cause. Feline idiopathic vestibular syndrome strangley seems more common in the Northeast and during late summer. Here is a brief description of the ailment from cathealth.com in case your kitty should ever get "off kilter" in late summer:

"We term this feline vestibular syndrome, or idiopathic vestibular disease. Now that’s a big mouthful of words. What we are really saying is that the vestibular system, which is a part of "control central" for the cat’s balance gets out of kilter, and for no obvious reason... Nobody has been able to confirm a single common cause for these cases... We see cases here, there and everywhere, though some studies find a slight increased incidence of this disorder in late summer and early fall. Some veterinarians also see a tentative association with recent outbreaks of respiratory infections.

Cats may cry out, roll around, have a head that tilts way off to one side, eyeballs that oscillate back and forth, may lean against walls or furniture, fall down, and seem "out of it". Sometimes if both ears are affected, the head may not be tilted much and kitty may not want to move at all. The affected cats most certainly are as puzzled as we are!"

Indiana Jones featured in one of my miniature paintings (right)

My little, (er, OK...rather large) kitty was SO frightened about feeling "off kilter" that he thrashed about and yowled while losing control of a few bodily functions, hence my heightened concern! But, now that the vet visit has passed, and Indiana has had a chance to heal, he is already feeling better. Indy is sitting up and securely tucked in to a hiding spot under my bed. I wanted to write a little about feline idiopathic vestibular syndrome because it may help one of you if your kitty every becomes a Summer Dizzy Kitty!

New Miniature Painting Black Rabbit And Lace

Tonight I am starting a new miniature painting in a different size format: four by six inches. This is actually quite large compared to the ACEO format I have been painting in for the last five years! These little bunnies are Rupert and Duncan of the Fabbitz. Learn more about these super cute long eared characters here. Duncan will be the main character in a new book I am illustrating written by the Fabbitz number one "bunny herder", Julia.

Here are our Fabbitz, (as in "Fab Five", only rabbitz, and er, only four)

Good Company And A Sweet Horse

About a month ago, I got a surprise email from a high school friend I had not seen in twenty four years! We originally met in California thirty four years ago. Through all the changes and adventures that led both of us all over this continent, she ended up in the same state, within a few hours of where I am now living! What a delight and joy to have reconnected with my friend. Over the next month we planned a summer get together with her daughter and grand children. One little grandchild in particular, is especially "horse crazy" and I just happen to have a sweet little horse I am sure you all know...Little Bit.

Below is Arianna on the right, her little granddaughter (just visible behind Little Bit) and myself on the left. We're getting all geared up to ride Little Bit:

When my friend Arianna arrived with her darling grandchildren, and stepped out of her car, I swear she looked exactly the same!! What a thrill for us to discover that even with all those years having tumbled by, we both felt our friendship had barely skipped a beat.

The pictures here are of Arianna and her grandchildren on our "Big Horsey Day" with Little Bit. Arianna's oldest granddaughter (the especially "horse crazy" one) had some riding skills but had never actually taken a horse out on her own. After a little guidance and encouragement, she was trotting sweet Little Bit around all on her own and loving it!! I am so proud of both Little Bit and the darling young horsewoman.

Arianna's granddaughter gets her stirrups adjusted:

A little more adjusting:

And off she goes all on her own for the very first time!

It was a joy to share this part of my life and my world with an old friend. Thanks Arianna for finding me and reaching out!
