Meeting Maggie Mei

Three years ago a young lady found my miniature paintings on eBay and asked me if I would illustrate her children's story. That began the long delightful process of creating and publishing Moonlight Memoirs . Two of the truly interesting things about Maggie Mei Lewis are that she is adopted from China and that she wrote Moonlight Memoirs as a thirteen years old. Over the course of our project, Maggie Mei, her mother Greta, and I worked together closely producing this wonderful (and well received) book...all the while having never actually met! This past weekend I flew to Maryland to meet Maggie Mei and Greta plus attend the Baltimore Book Festival for a book signing.

Maggie's family put me up in their "Bambie Trailer" an oh so cute Airstream in their yard that became my little nest away from home. It was a blast!

It was such a deliciously short plane trip (compared to my usual trip across country to care for mom in California), and the anticipation of meeting Maggie and Greta (Maggie's mom) was thrilling. When you get to know someone so intimately online, but not actually face to face...one's imaginations can paint a far different picture of our cyber friends. So, with heart thumping, I walked through baggage claim to instantly spot the sweet cheery face of Greta Johnson. A big hug and it felt like we had been friends for years.

The Lewis-Johnson family consists of Maggie, her sister Irene, her mom and dad, four dogs, five cats, four bunnies, two parrots, a horse...and one Guinea pig, so there was no shortage of animal snuggles this weekend!

Maggie works at the Maryland Renaissance Fair each weekend, so Greta and I scooted over to the fair after my arrival Saturday so that I could finally meet this lovely young woman.

The afternoon was cool and raining, but the atmosphere of the fair was exotic, and richly Renaissance. It was so much fun to approach Maggie's booth, and see this charming girl all decked out in her fair maiden costume...long black hair down to her knees. Maggie and I embraced each other then stepped back to absorb the magical feeling of finally meeting face to face.

The next morning we were all on pins and needles anticipating the Book Festival, and anxious to set up. The Book Festival slowly unfolded into a long day of making contacts, book signing, and book sales. We wrapped up the event with a fun adventure through Baltimore and dinner at the Kali's Court in historic Fells Point for great Tapas. Yum!

We ended the three day adventure with visits to some of Maggie and Greta's friends who are carrying Moonlight Memoirs in their shops. A jaunt to Annapolis (oh, my what a charming town!!) to eat at Middleton Tavern and to visit the quaint Annapolis Bookstore. Finally, a quick stop at a pet store where I met this wee little Chihuahua who seemed to have come right out of our book. I also met an adorable ginger haired little girl who proceeded to tell me all about her long, long, list of things she must acquire for that horse she hopes to get very soon (her mom only giggled with each addition to the list!)

It was a fantastic three days that filled me with inspiration and invigorated me from being in the company of such unique, talented, kind, generous, and happy people! Thanks Greta, Maggie, Irene, Rod, all you furry four legged, and feathered two legged critters who share your Maryland home.

To Balto For Book Signing

I am hopping on a plane early tomorrow morning to meet young Maggie Mei Lewis, author of the children's book I recently illustrated. Maggie, her mother, and I have been working together for three years and have yet to meet! This is really an exciting and gratifying trip. If you are anywhere around Baltimore on Sunday, come meet Maggie and I and buy a signed copy of Moonlight Memoirs at The Baltimore Book Festival!

New Miniature Art Begins

Above is a "Thumbnail" (a small rough sketch) for my newest little painting. I will be beginning a new children's book called "Duncan's Magic Garden" whose main character is a beautiful black bunny named...er, Duncan. With my new painting I am inspired to create a decorative border such as the one I used in my last painting. The new mini will be 4x6 inches on cotton Bristol

Wednesday

Three New Art Bookmarks

I designed a few new bookmarks while I was on the long flight to and from California last week. The images are from my original paintings done in Colored Pencil and India Ink. I use a graphics program to digitally dismantle my original art and then reassemble it in this bookmark format. Each bookmark is signed and dated. They measure 2.25 inches by 7 inches with a heavy protective plastic sleeve that measures 2.5 inches by 7 inches plus an extra 1.5 inch area from which to hang a favorite tassel. The bookmarks are printed from my Epson printer with Archival Ink on Archival Paper with a Matte finish. These little gems are rated to last 98 years or 200 years if kept in your book. (Thats a long time!) Hope you enjoy them! (Click on an image to zoom in)

A Break From ACEOs - 50% Off All Remaining

After five years of painting strictly ACEOs, I think I am going to take a break! My last two miniature paintings have been 4 x 6 inches, and I am not sure I can go back to the ultra diminutive 2.5 inches by 3.5 inches. So...I knocked off %50 of the original prices for the five ACEOs listed to your left.

Monday

Breathless Quiet

I recently returned from a week in California caring for my elderly mother. This is the fourth trip to my home town for me this year as my siblings and I take turns caring for mom. Spending time in the house where I grew up is always relaxing though sometimes a little bittersweet. With mom 100% confined to bed, most of her time is spent blissfully dozing or engrossed in a good novel, and the house is quiet, I mean really quiet! Then... because its hot in southern California and our 1920s-era house has no air conditioning, the windows are always flung open to the hum of a quiet old neighborhood.

I often have a feeling in my childhood home of being able to see out but not being visible to anyone passing by. In the old house, in the breathless quiet, I sometimes find a place between the delicate shadows and filtered sunlight on a windowsill, that seems to hold such tremendous resounding peace. Maybe because I am also meandering along the wisps and swirls of memories as I look at the beautiful windowsill patterns. For whatever reason it's a rich and lovely snippet in time.

Wednesday was blissfully and supremely quiet here at my mom's little house in California where I am taking care of her this week. I was able to really knuckle down and finish my latest miniature painting. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I have a new children's book in the works and so am experimenting with a different size and "support" (the board I am using) I struggled with the new surface because it responded so differently to the India ink and the watercolor. However, as an artist I think its important to experiment, even though it can be frustrating, because thats how delightful new techniques are born.

Below are the last few steps in the miniature paintings progress:

More Work On Mini Art

It was a very full morning for mom today. I am here in California for a week taking care of mom while my oldest sister is enjoying a quick break from her role as full time caregiver. This morning with visiting nurses, Hospice volunteers, and an impromptu "In And Out Burger" party...the ol' gal is all worn out! So, this afternoon while mom is in deep contented sleep, I worked quite a bit on my latest miniature painting.

I am again experimenting with a different "support" (thats the arty term for paper or board). With my newest illustration project coming up, I want to try a different size, style, and surface. The above photograph shows the first stages of colored background with India ink. The two photographs below show more layers of colored pencil and watercolor. The ink responded differently than I am used to, it absorbed very quickly. So I experimented with layers of first colored pencil, then watercolor, then colored pencil again. I like the grainy effect that the last layer of pencil left behind. This is a larger piece for me than the usual ACEOs. The little painting is 4x6 inches done in India ink, colored pencil and possibly a bit of white acrylic.

Arrived! And More Work On New Miniature Art

The trip across country to care for my elderly mom was long but smooth. I always enjoy (well, almost always) visiting with passengers sitting next to me on the plane, seeing a new perspective on life and finding common ground. Once I finally arrived, Bakersfield California was a bit warmer than I expected, (over 100 degrees) so I had to do a quick bit of adjusting! But, now I am settled in, have mom all dry and comfy with a fresh novel in her hands, and I have worked a bit more on my newest miniature painting. This is a larger piece for me than the usual ACEOs. The little painting is 4x6 inches done in India ink, colored pencil and possibly a bit of white acrylic.

Wild And Crazy Holiday

On what was supposed to be a day of rest, my "tween" son miscalculated a bike jump and plowed face first into the hard ground. After the convening of six vehicles including our local fire department, ambulance and volunteer EMTs, then an ambulance ride and five hours in the emergency room, the little man is quite busted up! A broken nose, fat lip, and broken maxilla will require another visit to our primary doctor, our Orthodontist, and a Plastic Surgeon. Suffice to say, it was not the Labor Day we all had planned! Poor lil dude!

With all the excitement and a planned journey for me back out to California to care for my elderly mom in a couple of days, I have not put one brush stroke to my latest painting! This little piece will have to ride along with me to the West coast to be finished at mom's kitchen table while I take my turn caring for her.

The newest little painting will have to ride along to Cali.!

I'll keep you posted on the progress of this new painting as I spend some anticipated quality time with mom.

Mom dozing and reading and dozing...

Finally, Some More Work On Miniature Painting

Finally, a chance to work on my newest miniature painting! With my kiddos back in school...the teen in nearby early college with a complex college schedule, as well as working "in town". The tween in football practice five nights a week. Then, lets not forget the getting up at the crack of way early...I am zippin' around like a little yellow cab on speed! Phweeh!

Below is the ink drawing for my newest miniature "Mouse With Fall Border"
I am beginning a new children's book and experimenting with a different size format (4x6 inches). With this somewhat larger size, I am trying my hand with an intricate border.

Zip, zip...enjoy!!

Twitter's Follow Friday - Like Cyber-Synergy

This may sound odd, but I see Twitter (especially "Follow Friday") as an opportunity to create waves, or expanding ripples of positive energy. I joined Twitter about six months ago and have slowly begun to learn how to use it as a wonderful supportive community. As you select individuals to follow and begin to actually interact with people on Twitter, you find that it can be a pretty amazing "Twittersphere" or community of great contacts. I believe a good recipe for your "Tweets" on Twitter is:

* 90% Sincere interaction with people, "Re-Tweeting" (meaning to repeat some one elses great information) RT-ing others art, sales, pictures, great news, etc.

* 10% Self Promotion

On Fridays there is a Twitter event called FollowFriday (or "followfriday, or #ff which is the "hash tag" code on Twitter) it's a chance to recommend your favorite people for others to follow. For me, FollowFriday has become almost an all day project, but really a labor of love. It brings me joy to recommend another person, add a few brief highlights about them, and "pay it forward" by bringing them more followers on Twitter.

So come Tweet with us on Twitter's #followfriday!
