My Childrens Book Wins Seventh Award!

In June of 2007, this beautiful young lady, Maggie Mei Lewis, contacted me online and asked if I would illustrate her children's story. That began the long -delightful process of creating and publishing Moonlight Memoirs.

Two truly interesting things about Maggie Mei Lewis are: she is adopted from China and she wrote Moonlight Memoirs at only thirteen years old!

Over the course of our project, Maggie Mei, her mother Greta, and I worked together closely producing this wonderful (and well received) book.

This charming and inspiring children's book JUST won a seventh award; the 2011 Da Vinci Eye Award for "Outstanding Cover Design".

The story of Moonlight Memoirs:
"Two young mice venture outside one cold and snowy night. Their leisurely walk turns into a life-changing event when they meet a mysterious old mouse who beckons them to follow. This mouse - along with several other animal friends - each the two curious mice a comforting lesson about love’s eternal nature."

Moonlight Memoirs is now in its second printing. You can purchase a copy of our award winning children's book directly from me here.

What Are Your ACEO (Miniature Art) Tips?

So, what IS an ACEO? In 2004 the unique little art form known as ACEO (Art Cards Editions and Originals) was born on eBay. ATC (Art Trading Cards) have been around for centuries and are usually traded or exchanged rather than sold. In contrast, artists primarily create ACEOs with the intention of selling them. ACEOs came to be as a result of the public's interest in acquiring and collecting these tiny works of art that were (up until the ACEO) strictly traded between artists.

Where to buy ACEO?
Today ACEOs are flourishing, (on any given day at least 100,000 ACEO originals are sold somewhere on the internet) Etsy, eBay, and ArtFire are a few great sources for original miniature art/ACEOs.

ACEO supplies
More and more people are collecting ACEOs and art supply stores are beginning to stock specialized materials that help artists create them. Dick Blick is my favorite art supply source.

Some of the greatest appeals for the ACEO are their size, (small enough to fit inside standard card-collector pockets, sleeves or sheets), and they are an affordable way for people to acquire original art.

Above is one of my favorite recent ACEOs.
"Spring Chipmunk"
India ink and colored pencil
2.5" x 3.5"

I personally discovered ACEOs on eBay in 2005 and began creating the little works of art that year. My versions of this small format began to sell immediately on eBay and I found myself inspired to create more. Over the years I have painted and sold about 500 ACEO originals and 1,000's of prints.

Here are a few of my newest ACEOs:
"Nikky" Commission for my dear friend Karen Lideen
India ink and colored pencil
2.5" x 3.5"

More about Nikky and his step by step work in progress, here.

"Spring Cardinal" Commission.
India ink and colored pencil
2.5" x 3.5"

How to display ACEOS?
A challenge I see for ACEO collectors is finding creative ways to display and store these miniature works of art. Here is one idea I came up with: Up-cycled ACEO Frame

I Need Your Opinion On Miniature Animal Art

I've been creating these little Art Pendants for a few weeks and they seem to be a real hit!
I am about to create three more Art Pendants using beautiful round bronze frames and need your opinion about which art to use.

Here is the Bronze Frame:

The remaining images will be used on these petite round tins, (cute, right?)

So, below are the images (remember, I need THREE) and a poll to cast your vote.
OR you can tell me your opinion in a comment!

4-21-2011:

Here is the first art pendant I created as a result of your valuable suggestions!
You can read more about him here on Etsy .

Enjoy!

Win A Bunny Art Pendant!

WIN my little Bunny Rabbit and Strawberry Art Pendant!

Just "Follow" this blog (see "My Peeps" lower right) and leave a comment on this post.

I'll give this Bunny Rabbit and Strawberry Art Pendant away to the 15th person who leaves a comment here.

I had seen these made by other artists on Etsy and thought how fun it would be to try some of my own. Thinking it would also be a way of sharing my art in a unique form that is charming, wearable and gift-able! I have been creating these little art gems for a few weeks, and I'm having SUCH fun! These small art pendants (necklaces) feature my miniature art and you can find the whole collection here in my Etsy shop.

The Bunny and Berry pendant is strung on a silky brown ribbon with a silver clasp. The necklace measures about 28" and will arrive in an organza bag, carefully packed with extra art goodies.

    Good luck!

Up-cycled Miniature Art Frame - How to Display an ACEO

One of the biggest challenges, for ACEO (Art Cards Editions and Originals...see a full definition of an ACEO below) collectors is finding creative ways to display these miniature works of art. I have come up with a solution! Introducing my Up-cycled CD Case ACEO Frame:

I have been pondering this idea for a while, and each time I glanced over at an empty CD case on my desk, I thought how perfect it would be to house one of my miniature ACEO prints! So this is the first of its kind.

The little protective frame is an "up-cycled" clear plastic CD case. Inside is a removable ACEO print (included) of my miniature art. The colorful paper that frames your miniature is archival as are the photo corners which hold the print.

You can change out your ACEO with prints you have collected and can even store a few inside the case.

I have attached a small brass hanger on the back of the little frame.

    So What Is An ACEO?

Below is one of my ACEOs (Art Cards Editions and Originals) "in hand" so that you can get a sense of the size of these little (2.5" x 3.5") works of art.

    ACEO Defined:
In 2004 the unique little art form known as ACEO (Art Cards Editions and Originals) was born on eBay. ATC (Art Trading Cards) have been around for centuries and are usually traded or exchanged rather than sold. In contrast, artists primarily create ACEOs with the intention of selling them. ACEOs came to be as a result of the public's interest in acquiring and collecting these tiny works of art that were (up until the ACEO) strictly traded between artists.

Today ACEOs are flourishing, (on any given day at least 100,000 ACEO originals are sold somewhere on the internet) More and more people are collecting ACEOs and art supply stores are beginning to stock specialized materials that help artists create them. Two of the greatest appeals for the ACEO are that they small enough to fit inside standard card-collector pockets, sleeves or sheets, and they are an affordable way for people to acquire original art.

I personally discovered ACEOs on eBay in 2005 and began creating the little works of art that same year. My versions of this small format began to sell immediately on eBay and I found myself inspired to create more. Over the years I've been able to perfect some interesting techniques and mediums for my little ACEOs.

The most common way to store these miniature masterpieces, is to use a baseball card sleeve and a binder. The drawback with this method of display is that the ACEOs are hidden away. A dramatic way to display an ACEO is to have it professionally framed, but that can be quite expensive. I hope you enjoy my ACEO display solution and begin your own collection of these tiny treasures.

The print I include with your Up-Cycled Frame is of Colored Pencil and India Ink bunny rabbit painting by me, Melody Lea Lamb. It is printed from my Epson printer with archival Ink on Epson archival paper with a Matte finish. These little prints are rated to last about 100 years. The print is signed by the artist (me!) and I mail the whole Up-cycled package in a small box via Priority Mail.

    Enjoy!
